My name is Sheher Bano, and I am from Lahore. When my freelancing journey began, I was only 15 years old and studying in Grade 9. Looking back today, I realize that the decision to learn freelancing at such a young age changed my life in many ways.
Around a year before starting my freelancing career, my uncle encouraged my father and other family members to learn graphic design and freelancing. A training session was arranged for several members of my family. Initially, I was not included, but with the support and encouragement of my mother, I was finally allowed to join.
That decision proved to be one of the most important opportunities of my life.
During the training, I worked hard to learn graphic design and continuously challenged myself to experiment with new ideas and techniques. Sometimes I succeeded, and sometimes I failed, but every mistake became a learning experience. My dedication and enthusiasm surprised many people around me and helped me build confidence in my abilities.
After completing the graphic design training, I moved on to learning Fiverr and the fundamentals of online freelancing. Like many beginners, my journey was not smooth. I faced numerous challenges, including multiple Fiverr account suspensions and setbacks that would have discouraged many people.
However, I refused to give up.
After several attempts and countless hours of effort, I finally received my first order. The feeling was incredible. As a teenage girl earning online through her own skills, it was a moment of pride and achievement. Throughout this journey, my mentor, Umar Farooq, provided continuous guidance, motivation, and support whenever I faced difficulties.
Like every freelancer, I experienced both highs and lows. There were times when my gigs ranked on the first and second pages of Fiverr search results and orders arrived regularly. There were also periods when orders stopped coming altogether.
At the same time, I had another important responsibility—my education.
As a high-achieving student, balancing freelancing and academics was not always easy. Managing Fiverr accounts required significant attention and time, which sometimes affected my school performance. I soon realized that I needed a different approach that would allow me to continue learning while maintaining my academic success.
To solve this challenge, I started collaborating with another student from the Freelancing Skill community who outsourced projects to me. Instead of managing an entire Fiverr account, I focused solely on completing design tasks. This arrangement allowed me to continue earning while dedicating more time to my studies.
Although my income was modest, averaging around 7,000 PKR per month, financial gain was never my primary motivation. The greatest reward was the feeling of independence—the ability to cover my personal expenses and small luxuries without asking my parents for money.
More importantly, my story is not about earnings.
It is about opportunity.
It is about showing that girls can develop valuable skills, build successful careers, and become financially independent when they receive support from their families.
Many talented young women are unable to pursue professional careers due to social limitations or concerns about workplace environments. Freelancing offers a powerful alternative. It provides flexibility, independence, and the opportunity to work from the safety and comfort of home while building a professional future.
Freelancing allows individuals to control their schedules, choose their projects, and create opportunities that might not otherwise exist. For many women, it can be a pathway to both personal and financial empowerment.
My message to parents is simple: support your daughters, encourage their ambitions, and allow them to develop their skills. The confidence and independence they gain can have a lasting impact on their future.
I hope to see many more women entering the world of freelancing and sharing their own success stories in the years ahead.
I am Sheher Bano, and I am proud to be a member of the Freelancing Skill community.
